For my choice book I read lock and Key, by Sarah Dessen. The main character in this book is a 17 year old girl named Ruby. She and her mother have similar features like their red hair and pale skin. Ruby was abandoned by her mother a couple of months before she was about to turn 18. She had to fend for herself for a long time. Even when her mom was still around she did everything, like paying the bills and finding something to eat. She feels like she doesn’t have to depend on anyone and that she can take care of herself. She can be very independent, and she can also be sweet and lonely on the inside. I think Ruby is independent because she lived by herself for moths before anyone found out. She can be lonely sometimes in this book because when she has to change schools and she doesn’t know anyone there. At the end of this book Ruby changes and learns a lot.
I think this book was really good. I would recommend this to girls. I think girl would like it more than the boys would is because it has romance and family. The thing I liked the most about the book was the main character. It seemed like she wasn’t afraid of anything. She would leave school to go to her old house and see if her mom came back, or go see her old friends from her other school. One part in the book that I liked was when she went to meet her friends in the woods and she got drunk and passed out. Then the next day she woke up in her neighbor’s truck because he picked her up. Later in the book they have a little relationship, and that’s when she finds out that his dad beats on him. I think that the family has a big part in this book because Ruby starts out with a bad one and ends off with a pretty good one. At the beginning her mom drinks and smokes pot, and then she leaves Ruby all alone. So Ruby has to live with her older sister and brother in law. Then one day her teacher asked her to ask people what family means to them. By the end of the book she gets a lot of different answers but she like her sisters the best.
